Hubbs Creek

Friday, March 25, 2022 7:23 PM

We have had the great fortune of meeting many wonderful winemakers here in PEC and through their kindness and generosity of time – we have learned a great deal about their process, their challenges (this climate is just NUTS for growing grapes), the terrain and their ambitions. There really is no pretension here, there are no stupid questions and most every winemaker we’ve ever had the pleasure to meet are very personable and genuinely love to educate you about their craft. One of those special winemakers is John Battista Calvieri, co-owner of the family run Hubbs Creek Vineyard, and I just wanted to give him a little shout out today!

John and his brothers Joe and Nick planted their first vines here in 2002 (so, if I’m doing the math correctly - that would make this year their 20th anniversary!). The actual tasting room is very basic with no bells and whistles which totally works because their wines are so wonderful, they speak for themselves. And, if you are lucky enough to visit on the days that John is around - the minute you step inside you will be captivated by his warmth, sense of humour, energy, passion and enthusiasm for the art of winemaking.

This business is not for the faint of heart at all (few get into this business to get rich!) and this is not his full-time vocation, I believe he works as an electron microscopist in Toronto. What drives him in this business is clearly his passion and fascination for the art of making wine.

Hubbs Creek produces a small yield each year and they sell out fast! I believe the vineyard is best known for its Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Rose. If you’re planning on doing a tour of the PEC wineries this year – be sure to stop by Hubbs Creek to say “Hello” to John – it’s just a stone’s throw away from many of the other wonderful wineries and cideries in the region and you won’t regret it! With COVID still a going concern – it is best to check their site or social pages for operating hours and protocols. I’m not sure if the tasting room will be fully open yet.

Thank you John for being so delightful and so generous with your time! Happy 20th to you and your family and we look forward to visiting again soon!
